The first preparatory step for any successful backpacker is the organization of the backpacks. The backpacks, and not only need to be compact and sturdy, they will also need to be filled with essential and utility items. Organizing a backpack can be a very difficult task, not to mention the tediousness of planning. In spite of this difficulty, people will need to ensure that they spend adequate amount of time to plan and organize their backpacks. An improperly organized backpack can leave the travelers and travel during times of need. The basic items that need to be a part of every backpack are – survival gear, first aid kits, clothes and activity equipment. Amongst these items, selection of the activity equipment can prove to be the easiest of all tasks. People can easily buy or assemble all the equipment that is necessary for the type of backpacking activity that they are planning for. Selection of clothes can also be an easy task. All the backpackers need to ensure is that they have clothes that offer protection against the elements are also sturdy enough to withstand the rigors of the backpacking activity. The clothes will also need to be adapted to the type of weather and climate that the backpackers are likely to face.

Survival gear can include emergency food items, emergency communication equipment, etc. These items can be adapted to the unique requirements of the backpackers and can also be adapted to the requirements imposed by the backpacking activities. First aid kits can be more or less standard and can be purchased off the shelves and included as a part of the backpacks, unless there are specialized requirements that need to be fulfilled. Backpackers will also need to ensure that their activities are in compliance to the governmental and environmental specifications. The specifications can be easily identified and determine by visiting any authorized website, or even by soliciting information from professional backpacking organizations. Along with this backpackers will also need to ensure that they select their backpacking locations based on the directives given by experts. Some of the destinations may not have the requisite permissions to allow backpacking activities, and the backpackers will need to be cognizant of these factors. Last but not least, backpackers will need to ensure that there is at least one member of the family or friends circle were aware what the plans, and the activities that they are likely to undergo. This is just a contingency plan and can be of great benefit to backpackers if an emergency situation arises during their activities.
